This volume is historically the third to describe the mineralogy of the Black Hills, South Dakota. The first was Samuel Scott's map and forty-page folder in 1897. "Minerals of the Black Hills" by Victor Ziegler followed in 1914 as Bulletin 10 of the South Dakota School of Mines. Ziegler's book has been the only available reference work until now.
